Live Music -- Free Food -- Family Activities
The Dr. Ossian H. Sweet Foundation is collaborating with Wayne County and Forgotten Harvest to provide food to the community.
On this Saturday, September 9th from 3p-7p we will be at Hutchison/Howe School located at 2600 Garland Avenue. The food distribution is part of the Foundations 5th Annual Open House.
We will also commemorate the 98th Anniversary of the day the Sweet family transformed America. Local talent will take us down memory lane, filling the air with music by Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, The Gap Band and so many others; we will also be viewing snippets from the documentary “The Chronicles of Dr. Ossian H. Sweet.”
On September 8, 1925, Dr. Ossian Sweet, a prominent African American physician, purchased and moved into the modest bungalow at 2905 Garland, in an all-white Detroit neighborhood. Moving in with him was his wife Gladys, brothers Henry and Otis and seven friends. The next day unfolded into a mob scene, which led to murder charges and a landmark lawsuit that helped define Detroit race relations.
In addition to the aforementioned, there will be free prepared food, bouncers for the children, vendors and plenty of family fun.
Volunteers are more than welcome to assist in other areas.
